Parents play an integral role in the success of our school. Each family commits 15 hours of volunteer work per year. In reality, most families far surpass our requirement! You can help in the following ways:
Class Parent – class parents help teachers organize & recruit volunteers for field trips, special class activities and class fundraisers such as Monday Market. Class parents also help organize gifts for the teachers for the holidays and during teacher appreciation week.
Friday Festival – held every week, our Market is a way for our community to share their excess fruits, vegetables, flowers and other like items. Different grades are assigned to the different weeks. Students and parents alike enjoy the beautiful bounty of goods. All proceeds from the Market are used to fund environmental programs such as field trips, guest speakers and our garden program.
Fundraisers – each year, the school sponsors various fundraisers to support our scholarship program and other special efforts. Parents organize planning committees for each of the fundraisers. We need volunteers to help with planning each of our events. Past events have included island-wide concerts, yard sales, and evening dinner dances.
Elective Program – we offer a unique elective program three times a year. For twelve weeks each fall and spring, students take courses of their choice every Wednesday afternoon. These electives are taught by parent volunteers. In the past, we have had parents teach classes such as Robotics, Yoga, Raw Cooking, Chess, Physical Education, Japanese Watercolor and Pottery. If you have a special talent and enjoy working with children, this is a great way to help our school.
Board of Trustees – our school has an active and committed Board of Trustees who meet regularly to ensure that our school meets all of its fiduciary and legal obligations. The Trustees view themselves as the stewards of our school. They are responsible for long range planning, developing policy and for hiring and supervising the school leader. Elections are held every spring. Parents who are interested in serving on the Board should contact the current Board President.
Annual Work Days – every year we have one or two annual workdays where we get together and spruce up the campus. We clean, paint, organize and talk story. Working together to care for our campus builds friendships and a collective pride in our school.
Special Event Committees – several times a year, we put on special events which require parent support. These events include our annual winter festival, earth day, the talent show and graduation. Event chairs post meeting times and dates in our newsletter.
